New Textile Craft. A new show of 4 young textile designers at DIREKTORENHAUS- a Berlin artdesign venue space for young & upcoming artist/designers who work in the “greyzone” between fine art & applied arts.
From 5th of July until the 30th of July 2011 the Direktorenhaus changes into a mazy wintergarden of knitted materials, woven textiles, organic objects and hand-stitched fabrics.
Wintergarden
/ East India Company / The explorers from the ”colonies” bring home exotic plants/ A tulip-trend begins in europe and America/ A british doctor invent the way of putting plants in pots/
/Ward & The glass box/ Midt 19th century: Nathaniel Ward (a victorian gentleman) invents a transportable glass box for exotic plants to stay alive during transport from the far East/ East India Company period/
/ The glass box allows the european upper class to build ”miniature jungles” / a Trend starts with especially Ferns & palm-tree plants / everybody wants an indoor glass-cabinet with exotic plants/ The glass-box changes everything!!!
/ Industrial age, late 19th century/ the green exotic plants are a fresh detail in many dark and grey european living-rooms / a Palm-plant trend evolves into ”must have” interior- detail / Arts & Crafts movements are plant-decoration-specialists / William Morris/
/ Wallpapers & textiles are influenced by the ”indoor-garden-trend” / Britain call the Wintergardens for ”Conservatories” / Victorian period/
/During 1920-30 a cactus-trend appears with interiors/ Glass-cabinets grows into big greenhouses and ”Botanical gardens”/
